Akutan
Akutan is an island in the Eastern Aleutians. The village of Akutan is home to about 64 Aleutians. Most of their ancestors moved to Akutan from Akun, the island just to the east of Akutan when Norwegians built a whaling station on Akutan. The whaling station has been disbanded. But a Trident Seafoods processing plant is now the main economic engine on the island.
Akutan from the hill overlooking the village. The body of water is a bay of the island. The mountains on the other side of the bay are a part of Akutan. The entire island is volcanic in origin and rises abruptly from the sea with little flat land anywhere.
